No Shoulders

by Jon Pineda

I slip an oar into
water & gently push
against the bottom

we drift while
perch thin shadows
in roots of tupelo

you point to where
they hang overhead
all skin & leaves

already lifeless
draped until one
slides through

a small space of
sky & into the river
just in front of us

surfacing bodiless
only its head floats
in our direction

Jon Pineda is the author of six books, most recently the novel Let’s No One Get Hurt (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2018). He teaches at William & Mary.
