Shenandoah has earned a global reputation since its founding in 1950, featuring work from writers including including E. E. Cummings, T. S. Eliot, Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, Langston Hughes and—later—Rita Dove, Yusef Komunyakaa, Mary Oliver, Joyce Carol Oates, Louise Erdrich, Amy Nezukumatathil, and so many more.
We also now support more kinds of writing and art than ever including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, comics, translations, and visual art. Publication in Shenandoah provides writers with financial, editorial, and promotional support, which, for emerging writers, can be an essential jumpstart to their careers. Thanks to editor R. T. Smith, who led the charge converting the magazine from print to digital in 2011, and to the generous financial support of Washington and Lee University, the writing and art we publish is available to writers and readers all around the world for free.
Shenandoah also supports emerging editors through its fellowship program, providing a space for fellows to curate their editorial voice and sharpen their editorial skills.
In 2025, we celebrated the magazine’s momentous 75th anniversary, and it is as vital as ever. Shenandoah now boasts a core staff of professionals and plays a crucial role in the curriculum of Washington and Lee’s English Department, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the literary ecosystem as interns, reading and editing the literature of the future while they learn valuable real-world skills applicable across many fields.
Please consider donating to support the work of writers, editors, and students—and to help us continue this crucial literary legacy.
